He had land that he paid men to work on, he did not own slaves and made a comfortable living in the nearby town. Then Northern barbarians came and though he and the men who worked his land could fight with blades, there were too many. Those who were not killed were taken captive.
The necklace Auctus wears is an Hellenistic choke collar. This is a sign that he was made a slave in South Eastern Europe before being brought to Roman soil. Auctus was not his name before, it is Latin and means large, but it is his name now and the gladiator life is his life now. He accepts these things. He fights in a Greek style but that is the only part of who he was before that remains, Auctus feels. He has become cold and harsh in order to survive. He rarely allows himself to think of the past, of his wife or her women who were taken too. He cannot bear to imagine their fates.
